Red Deer Polytechnic has been ranked among the top culinary schools in the country.

On Friday the organization announced they were ranked 17th among the best culinary schools in Canada by University Magazine.

“We are proud to be acknowledged across the nation for our dynamic culinary programming,” says Garnett Schoettler, Chair of Culinary Programs and Instructor at RDP.

“At Red Deer Polytechnic, we offer enhanced education and training opportunities in collaboration with industry partners that help fulfill labour market demand.”

For those interested in joining the program, they offer a three-year, part-time apprenticeship and a two-year, full-time culinary arts diploma program.

Once enrolled, students will learn from experienced chefs in many different ways including food preparation, nutrition and budgeting.

In the cook apprenticeship program, students attend the Polytechnic one day per week, which is 40 weeks annually, applying their knowledge in the workplace.

In the final year, students are eligible to earn a Red Seal Endorsement on their journeyperson certificate after passing the Red Seal Exam. The Red Seal Endorsement provides flexibility, allowing journeypersons to work anywhere in Canada.

When it comes to the Polytechnic’s Culinary Arts Diploma, students get the opportunity to explore the art and science of professional cooking.

In this diploma program, students learn the latest culinary techniques and tools in RDP’s commercial kitchen in a team oriented environment. They also build on foundational techniques and practices to learn advanced food-preparation skills as a culinary expert.

Students participate in both a 480-hour co-op and work-integrated learning opportunities in RDP’s Cornerstone Dining Room.

Once graduated are equipped to take on a variety of roles including as a chef, caterer, kitchen manager and restaurant owner, among many other career options within the hospitality sector.
