Nov 25, 2024 | 4:23 PM

New trial dates have been scheduled for a Red Deer woman charged in a Woodlands County shooting two years ago.

Amanda Britney Ann McCarthur, 24, is scheduled for a jury trial in Edmonton Court of King’s Bench from Jan. 12-19, 2026. She was previously scheduled for trial from Nov. 4-12, 2024.

She was ordered to stand trial following a preliminary hearing in Whitecourt Court of Justice on May 1, 2023.

It was on May 23, 2022, when Mayerthorpe RCMP were dispatched to the Mayerthorpe Health Centre after staff reported an adult male had been dropped off who was suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Mounties say the male was transported to an Edmonton hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Through the investigation led by Whitecourt RCMP and including Mayerthorpe RCMP, Western Alberta District General Investigation Services (GIS), Alberta RCMP Police Dog Services & Forensic Identification Services, it was determined the male had been shot in the hand and leg at a private residence in Blue Ridge, about midway between Whitecourt and Mayerthorpe.

Mounties allege a female suspect fired a round from a .22 caliber rifle, striking the male, before fleeing the scene in a vehicle. The firearm and suspect vehicle which was confirmed stolen, were recovered.

McCarthur was charged with:

  • unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • carrying a prohibited firearm in careless manner
  • unsafe storage of a firearm
  • pointing a firearm
  • possession of firearm for dangerous purpose
  • possession of a loaded prohibited firearm
  • unlawful discharge of a firearm with intent
  • aggravated assault
  • failing to comply with a release order and undertaking (x2)

Mounties say McCarthur was also arrested on outstanding warrants from Red Deer RCMP and Edmonton Police Service.
