Applications open for restorative justice program funding

The Government of Alberta has opened applications for a $720,000 investment into restorative justice programs through the Alberta Restorative Justice Grants.

Non-profit organizations and municipalities can both apply for the grant, which is designed to support initiatives aimed at resolving disputes outside of the formal court system, resulting in meaningful resolutions and community integration.

The government says restorative justice promotes accountability, healing and reconciliation by encouraging everyone involved in a crime to collaboratively discuss the impacts of the crime and take steps to repair the harm caused.

“Restorative justice is a valuable part of our justice system,” said Mickey Amery, Minister of Justice and Attorney General. “It provides opportunities for those who have been harmed and those who have caused harm to be active participants in their journey toward justice, accountability and reconciliation. The Alberta Restorative Justice Grants will empower communities to develop and implement programs that bring positive outcomes for everyone involved.”

Eligible applicants, including community-based coalitions, registered non-profits, Indigenous communities, youth justice committees and municipalities can apply for individual grants of up to $50,000. Applications are open until December 6.
