Survey seeks Red Deer-area Indigenous and equity-deserving youth, ages 15-30

ReThink Red Deer and Urban Indigenous Voices Society (UIVS) are hoping to connect with Indigenous and other equity-deserving youth for an important survey.

The survey is for people ages 15-30 and seeks to gauge interest levels in careers related to urban agriculture and the renewable energy sector.

Findings will inform the development of an employment and education action plan for those demographics in Red Deer and region.

“Equity-deserving means individuals that identify as having barriers to equal access, opportunities, and resources due to disadvantage and discrimination, and actively seek social justice and reparation,” explains Rene Michalak, project lead, ReThink Red Deer.

“We anticipate the study to be completed in early 2025 which will inform a proposal to the City of Red Deer in the second or third quarter. Provincial and federal capital funding is currently being applied for to support the proposal’s viability and to increase the scope of the study.”

The agencies are also pursuing corporate funders, such as ATCO which just signed on to support some of the study’s technical components; and they may collaborate with other local organizations.

An outline for the overall project notes that it should integrate Indigenous reconciliation, plus identify opportunities with Red Deer Polytechnic and Maskwacis Cultural College.

Among other things, it should also assess the technical and economic feasibility of renewable energy installations on urban brownfields (e.g., solar PV, wind, biogas, etc.).

The survey runs through November, but may be extended. It can be found here.
