Mrs. Hilda Jackson passed away in Red Deer, Alberta on Thursday, October 17, 2024 at the age of 73 years. Hilda was born on December 13, 1950, in Nijland, Netherlands. She immigrated to Canada as a young child with her parents, Arend and Hinke Spijksma, settling on a farm in the Blackfalds area, and spent most of her youth around Blackfalds and in Sylvan Lake, Alberta. Hilda went on to complete a diploma at NAIT, where she honed her skills in the Sign Making field. This supported and furthered her strong love of watercolor painting and calligraphy work. Both passions that she shared with many others in her years of living in Red Deer. In her early adult years, Hilda completed service time with the 78th Field Battery, Royal Canadian Artillery in Red Deer, before devoting her time to raising a family with her husband, Harvey Jackson. A mom of three children and a grandmother of four grandchildren, Hilda was one to help others, whether that was as a mother, sister, aunt or a friend, along with playing an active role in the community of Red Deer. She was involved with the Lettering Arts Guild of Red Deer, the Mountview-Sunnybrook Community Association, and as a lunchroom supervisor at Mountview School, in addition to years of work in the fabric and arts stores in Red Deer. Hilda could be found furthering her passion for art with her love of the outdoors camping with family and at their own Red Deer River property. She was always looking for scenery, old homesteads and flowers to paint. In her later years, Hilda shared her passion for sewing and crocheting, making blankets, toques and mitts for her extended family, and for arts and crafts sales in the Red Deer and Delburne areas. While she often stayed close to Red Deer, Hilda found time to travel with family and could always be found talking about her travels to other parts of Canada, the United States, Netherlands and Ireland. Hilda will be lovingly remembered and survived by her husband of fifty-one years, Harvey Jackson; her daughter, Heather, of Red Deer; her sons, Hal, of Hinton and Henry, of Calgary; her daughters-in-law, Kerri (Hal) and Jen (Henry); and her grandchildren, Avery, Isabelle, Norah and Wyatt. She will also be sadly missed by her brothers, Sybren Spyksma, George Spijksma, Wybren Spyksma and Willy Spyksma; and her sister, Ann Anderson. Hilda was predeceased by her sister, Gay Murphy and her parents, Arend and Hinke Spijksma. A Private Family Graveside Service was held. A Celebration of Hilda’s Life was held on Saturday, October 26, 2024 at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 35, 2810 Bremner Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta, at 1:30 p.m., where friends were invited to attend, share memories, and remember Hilda. In lieu of flowers, if desired, Memorial Donations in Hilda’s honor would be a simple act of kindness to the Ronald McDonald House Charity, a charity that supports families seeking vital medical treatment for their sick or injured child, a cause that was close to the Jackson family.
