Ken Schafer was born to his proud parents Valentine and Ella Schafer in Didsbury on June 19, 1937. He was the oldest of five children and loved it out on the farmland east of Olds. He was a regular attender to the May City School which served as both the building for Church/ Sunday School as well as his one room elementary school. Fun times included hunting and hiking in the coulee with family, as well as the yearly Christmas church program. After graduating high school in Torrington, Ken worked in Calgary and then attended Mountain View Bible College in Didsbury. This is where he met his wife, Gwen Brado. They were married in July 1960 and moved to Milo where he managed a lumber yard. After, they moved to Red Deer where Ken and Gwen worked, and also were founding members that help set the foundation of the original Evangelical Church that grew to be CrossRoads in Red Deer. Ken wanted to farm and though he faced the hardship of being hailed out multiple years, he continued to follow his passion of farming and eventually purchased a half section east of Olds. When the opportunity to farm his grandfather’s farm, Ken and Gwen moved to the family farm’s red brick house. They enjoyed life farming, traveling on their Honda Goldwing, as well as bus tours and cruises, that lead to many lifelong friendships. As Ken reflected over the years, he was very thankful for his heritage. Firstly, for his Christian heritage given to him by his parents and church, and for the rural and farming roots. Ken passed away in Red Deer on Thursday, October 10, 2024 after a battle with cancer, he placed his Faith in Jesus Christ and is now with his heavenly Father.
