Enrolment numbers a mixed bag for central Alberta school divisions

As students returned to the classroom last month across central Alberta, school divisions are reporting both increases and decreases in student enrolment.

Red Deer Public Schools were one of the divisions who reported an increase.

According to the board highlights reported on Oct. 9, the division had 11,414 students enrolled in September 2024 compared to 11,409 reported in 2023.

They also welcomed 130 international students this fall including some from Brazil, Belgium, Spain, and Germany.

In addition, they noted an increase in employees across their school with 1,427 as of September 2024, which is up from the 1,423 reported last year.

Chinook’s Edge School Division also saw an increase in their student population.

As of Sept. 30, 2024, there 11,262 students in the division which is an increase of 95 students from the 11,167 enrolled in 2023.

Wolf Creek Public Schools noted they had 7,329 students enrolled this year which is up by 50 from last year.

Clearview Public Schools, however, reported a minor decrease of 19 students among their schools.

During the 2023-24 academic year they had 2,347 students followed by 2,328 in 2024. The change in enrolment varied from school to school with some seeing an increase while others saw a decrease. Stettler saw an overall increase.

The Wildrose School Division reported 4,450 students as of Sept. 30 which is 78 students less than in 2023.

Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools did not make their enrolment numbers available in time for publishing.
