Mr. Glenn ‘Allan’ Nimmo passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, Red Deer, Alberta on Friday, October 11, 2024 at the age of 77 years. After a long hard-fought battle, the pain is now gone. Allan was born the fourth child of John ‘Jack’ and Lela Nimmo. Jack was born in Glen Avon, Scotland and Lela was born Lathrop, Missouri. With his Scottish heritage, and Allan’s mother being from the ‘Show Me’ state, many traits would show up in Allan a few times over the years. He had four sisters, Annie, Amy, Jean, and Pat, as well as many nephews and nieces. Allan left the farm to go explore the north country in Whitecourt, Alberta, to work in oil field with BJ Services, he moved from BJ Services onward and upward, to become an operator at the Windfall Gas plant in Whitecourt. While he was there, he earned his 3rd Class Power Engineering Certificate and met his wife of fifty-seven years, Georgina Gristwood, they were married on October 7, 1967. Together they moved back to Innisfail, Alberta in 1973 and had two boys, Glenn and Dean. From 1973 to 1976, they owned and operated a corner store, when corner stores were a thing; they only took one day off a year, and that was Christmas. When the store was sold, they went on their first trip to Hawaii; hard work did pay off! In 1981, they moved to the family farm. Allan went into the Real Estate business with the Weber Brothers, he brought the office which he owned and operated for thirty-eight years, gave it a name change and recruited lots of salespeople along the way; some who are still in the business. Allan’s office won many awards over the years, and he also serviced on the Alberta Real Estate Board for several years. While in Real Estate, Allan was interviewed by the local paper along with other people in office, the question was “if you could be someone else for a day who would you be?” Allan laughed and answered, “I would be a newspaper reporter. I would go around and ask questions and have total control of the situation”. During his time in Real Estate, Allan and his family also had a cow calf operation, and they did that for around twenty years until BSE hit the farming industry, and Allan had a heart attack, which slowed things down. After he retired from Real Estate he decided to get involved with the local rural power company, which is known today as EQUS. He was on the Board of Directors for twenty-three years and loved every minute of it, driving up and down the highway going to different meetings, and getting personable with MLA’s and Premieres. First with Jim Towle, as a travelling companion and then Glen Fox; he would tell his grand kids that Glen was his other brother. They covered many miles and solved many world and EQUS problems. Eyesight and mobility got the best of him, and he retired in 2022; this was a sad day for him. When the boys were growing up, they played hockey, Allan managed the team for a number of years and helped out where he could while boys where in 4-H. He never missed a show or gymkhana when his grand kids, Madison and Zach were in horse 4-H. The boys got married and each had two kids, Madison, Zach, Kylee, Brooke; Allan would do anything for family, but if his grand kids wanted something, some how it was made to happen, right down to last graduation this year, he was not feeling well but he wanted to go, so he did. He never missed a ball game when Kylee and Brooke were playing, if you wanted to know the score everyone asked Allan as he always knew the answer. He loved his daughters-in-law and counted on them both for their special place in his life whether it was cards, games, shopping, or just coming for visits. Allan did like to travel and had many trips to Mexico and Las Vegas, he brought a motor home in 2014 and went to the Yukon and following year, to Northwest Territories, and enjoyed lots of camping with the boys and their families. Allan worked hard his whole life right down to the end. Until we meet again, we’ll chat with you at river, rest easy, and pain free.
Allan will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Georgina, his sons, Glenn (Kimiko) and Dean (Carolyn), his grandchildren, Madison, Zach, Kylee and Brooke, his sister, Pat, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Lela Nimmo, and his sisters, Annie, Amy, and Jean. A Celebration of Allan’s Life will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Oklahoma Community Centre, 35378, Range Road 21, Innisfail, Alberta.
