Alberta announces new compensation agreement for resident physicians

Oct 9, 2024 | 9:58 AM

The Alberta Government has reached a new compensation agreement for resident physicians.

The province, in partnership with Alberta Health Services (AHS), the University of Alberta, University of Calgary and the Professional Association of Resident Physicians of Alberta has reached a four-year agreement that provides competitive and fair-market compensation for physicians in training.

The agreement includes a three percent wage increase in each of the first two years, and a two per cent increase in each of the last two years.

AHS president and CEO Athana Mentzelopoulos said, “We are extremely grateful to all of our resident physicians, who play a vital role in caring for Albertans and supporting our front-line physicians and health care teams. This agreement will help us recruit medical students and encourage them to practise in this province.”

The agreement is part of the province’s push to recruit, train, and keep more physicians in Alberta.

Sarah Hoffman, Alberta NDP Shadow Minister for Health, issued the following statement in response:

“Once doctors have completed their residency we want them to stay in our province.

“The work of the Professional Association of Resident Physicians of Alberta to get this tentative agreement across the line is good news for doctors.

“Unless this UCP government stops stalling and signs the agreement they have already reached with physicians, many will go to other provinces as soon as they complete their residency.

“There are nearly one million Albertans without a family doctor. The UCP government must abandon their war against doctors and get the new compensation model for primary care physicians signed today.

“The Alberta government is also failing to get vaccines to doctors’ offices in time for the upcoming flu season. In a province that is a world leader for transportation and logistics, it is irresponsible of the government to let a contract end before ensuring a distributor was in place.”
