The Red Deer Arts Council has a new gallery for residents to witness; “Body and Mind” by Debbie-lee Miszaniec features still life oil paintings depicting the struggle to reconcile the body and mind when it comes to weight loss management.

The exhibit runs Oct. 8 to Nov. 30 at the Kiwanis Gallery, and there will be a First Fridays exhibition night with the artist in attendance on Nov. 1 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

A soft sculpture sits surrounded by the Dutch baroque inspired paintings, tortured by the sweets around it and caught between natural desires and the expectations of diet culture.

The exhibition marks the point where one realizes they’ve developed an obsession with food yet feels powerless to change it given societal expectations.

Miszaniec is an Alberta artist working out of Calgary. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Alberta University of the Arts in 2008. She says her paintings draw from her observations of the human experience, history and society as well as her own experience as a working class western female artist.
