Sep 23, 2024 | 4:27 PM

The 10Peaks Innovation Exchange (10PIX), a conference designed to educate and inspire students with the possibilities of sustainable energy across Alberta, is coming to Red Deer Polytechnic on October 17.

Discussions will cover everything from sustainable projects to solar, oil and gas with net zero goals, and sustainable forestry practices, giving Alberta youth a chance to participate in innovative solutions and discussions for their future.

The event is free and has both in-person and virtual components, running from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. that day. There are 16 speakers and two keynote sessions expected, as well as a variety of interactive workshops, panel discussions, and networking opportunities.

Additionally, there will be a Student Networking Breakfast held the same day from 7:30-8:30 a.m. in the Cenovus Energy Learning Common at RDP where students, industry professionals, and community members can engage and discuss clean energy and innovation.

The breakfast will have a keynote speaker, Jeanine Vany, co-founder of Eavor Technologies, who will present on geothermal innovations and their impact on sustainable energy. Students from Oilfields High School and Lacombe Composite High School will also showcase their award-winning projects on vertical farming and robotics.

Other topics expected to be covered throughout the conference day include the future of energy transformation, clean-tech, sustainable innovations, and entrepreneurial strategies for a green economy. Officials say the experience is designed to equip attendees with practical tools and insights to contribute meaningfully to the energy sector’s transformation.

“[There were] rich discussions with students and peers on the bus ride home. The conference helped to pique curiosity and provide inspiration to the attendee, young and older,” said David Tait of the Foothills School Division after 10PIX 2023.

The keynote speaker for the conference will be Raylene Whitford, a finance professional and Cree-Métis entrepreneur. Whitford is experienced in the international energy industry and works with companies and governments to establish sustainable opportunities for Indigenous Peoples around the world.

Teachers and students can register for virtual attendance online. Tickets for the breakfast are $50 for adults and free for middle and high school students. Breakfast registration should also be done online.
