Third annual Agricultural Societies Day encourages community connection
September 21 marks Alberta’s third annual Agricultural Societies Day, created to recognize the work of the 292 agricultural societies across the province.
These societies are volunteer-led organizations committed to improving the quality of life in Alberta’s communities by organizing local fairs, farmers’ markets, rodeos, and more. Additionally, they provide community services such as hosting facilities that serve as gathering places, and providing support during emergencies.
The Calgary Stampede, for example, was formed in 1884 and is the oldest agricultural society in Alberta that is still in operation.
In the Red Deer area, in addition to the City’s Westerner Park, there is an agriculture society in Ponoka, Maskwacis, Rimbey, Bentley, Rocky Mountain House, two in Innisfail, two in Stettler, plus many more.
