Mrs. Sharlene Marie Curlock, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, surrounded by her husband and children after complications from a lengthy illness, went home to Jesus, on Monday, August 26, 2024 at the age of 73 years.
Sharlene Kienzle was born on May 14, 1951, in Taber, Alberta. She was one of ten children born to Elmer and Dorothy Kienzle. Sharlene spent her youth on the Prairies ending up in Estevan, Saskatchewan. There, she met a young man by the name of Robert John Curlock. The two were married on May 3, 1969. Before long, two children came along, Bruce Todd and Tracy Leigh.
The family spent many years in Cold Lake, Alberta, where Sharlene became a successful entrepreneur owning a retail store. Her personal time was spent playing sports and she was one heck of an athlete. Whether it was a ball diamond or a curling rink, Sharlene’s love for sports was matched only by her excellence in playing. She loved texting family and friends during her beloved, and sometimes frustrating, Oilers or Jays games, and spent many years as a faithful season ticket holder with the Red Deer Rebels.
However, her family and friends were always the center of her life. She embodied the best of qualities: unconditional love, strength of spirit, and an unending generosity that can be seen in her care for family and friends. Her grandchildren can attest to many years of summer “Grandma” camp that left them feeling loved and maybe a little spoiled. She also attended every sporting event her grandkids had and was ever present in their daily lives.
Sharlene and Bob retired to Red Deer, Alberta in 2005. They spent their retirement years deeply invested in their family’s lives, spending countless hours with her mom, siblings, children and grandchildren. Sharlene also had a friendship group that was as big and bright as the smile she flashed all the time.
Sharlene became ill in the last few years of her life. She developed a rare lung disease called sarcoidosis. Though her health failed in the last year of her life, few people would have known the extent of the struggle. Her joy of life and her indomitable spirit kept her pushing through the pain.
Sharlene will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Robert, and her children, Bruce and Tracy and their spouses, Pamela and Brian; and her grandchildren, Hannah, Connor, Abigail, Julia and Gracie. Her sisters, Deatta and Marilynne, and her brothers, Gerry and Kevin also mourn her loss.
The family will hold a Celebration of Sharlene’s Life later this Fall. If desired, in lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations in Sharlene’s honor may be made directly to the Canadian Sarcoidosis Organization and their affiliated Research Program at the University of Calgary, Cumming School of Medicine at www.engage.ucalgary.ca/sarcoidosis.
