Pedestrian killed in Ponoka collision

An adult pedestrian is dead following an alleged impaired driving collision in Ponoka over the weekend.

At 1:45 a.m., on July 28, 2024, Ponoka RCMP received notice of the collision, which occurred at the intersection of Highway 2A and 57 Avenue in Ponoka.

Emergency crews reported the pedestrian had been laying near the southbound lane of the road when they were struck by a vehicle travelling from the northbound lane.

Mounties said the collision occurred when the vehicle’s path was overcorrected, coming in contact with the pedestrian laying on the road.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. RCMP said the driver of the vehicle was arrested for impaired operation, while police remained on-scene for several hours to investigate with the support of the collision reconstructionist.
