2024 Calgary Stampede Cowboys Rangeland Derby

Jul 9, 2024 | 11:09 AM

It was another perfect night for chuckwagon racing at the Calgary Stampede Cowboys Rangeland Derby. Temperatures were quite warm, racetrack conditions were excellent, and some fantastic races were witnessed by a capacity crowd. When the evening wrapped up, it was 2012 GMC Rangeland Derby Champion Troy Dorchester, driving the Interac outfit, who topped the field with the fast time of the night after a penalty free run of 1:10.93.

From barrel number 3 in the 6th heat, Dorchester was the top wagon on the night by 33 one-hundredths of a second over Calgary Stampede Track Record Holder Obrey Motowyo. 2024 finalist Ross Knight was third, followed by 2024 Grande Prairie Stompede Champion Jamie Laboucane, with defending Cowboys Rangeland Derby Champion Layne MacGillivray completing the top five on the night.

A new leader has emerged as Chad Fike now sits atop the overall aggregate standings with a four-run total of 4:47.65. That puts him exactly 1.63 seconds ahead of Jamie Laboucane, with Rae Croteau Jr. and Chanse Vigen now splitting third place overall, with defending champion Layne MacGillivray in 5th place overall, 1.18 seconds out of third hole. Jason Glass, who had been leading the overall aggregate standings the past two nights, knocked over a barrel and dropped to 6th place overall, 2.03 seconds out of a possible spot in the Championship Final Heat.

The top 3 in the overall aggregate standings after Saturday, July 13 2024, will go into the championship final heat. The winner of the championship final heat will be declared the 2024 Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby Champion.
