RDES responds to brush fire Wednesday near bridges

Jun 27, 2024 | 9:39 AM

A brush fire had Red Deer Emergency Services (RDES) members occupied Wednesday afternoon.

The fire occurred in a forested area between the south ends of the 50 Avenue and 49 Avenue bridges.

Crews were called out around 4 p.m. and arrived within five minutes. It took about 45 minutes to get the fire under control, and another 45 to wipe out hot spots, says Deputy Chief Curtis Schaefer.

No one was seen in the area by the time crews arrived, and there are no reported injuries.

The cause remains under investigation.

Schaefer says the fire is a reminder that at this time of year, it’s extra important to ensure proper disposal of smoking materials, and to not have campfires along the riverbank in makeshift fire pits.

There were no evacuations of nearby businesses or homes.
