A science teacher at Red Deer’s Glendale Science and Technology School, has received national recognition for her work.

Lindsay Unland was recently presented with the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math).

“At Glendale, we have scheduled collaborative time with our Grade 1-5 teachers to discuss and explore the curriculum and brainstorm activities and lessons,” says Unland.

“The implementation of the new science curriculum has given us a fresh slate to explore creative ways to teach the content. I take those brainstormed ideas and help develop hands-on, engaging activities for students. I enjoy working with our Grades 6, 7 and 8 students through teaching our STEM related option courses to highlight STEM content and build capacity in students.”

Unland, who began teaching in 2007, and who is in her second year at Glendale, coordinates all science activities at the K-8 school.

Her achievements at Glendale include introduction of the Scratch junior project for Grade 1 students, which teaches kids how to create a coded project centred around an animal that they research.

She also organized October Hallo-STEAM (‘a’ for arts) Night, where 200+ visitors took part in season activities involving things like dry ice, slime and circuit wands.

“Reading what my colleagues said and wrote about me was incredibly touching and filled me with so much gratitude and appreciation. When I found out I was receiving the award, I was blown away,” she says.

Unland calls her role at Glendale, “a dream,” adding that science is her passion, and that learning about it should be experienced in a hands-on and interactive way.

“Having the opportunity to play a role in bringing that vision to life in our school has been incredibly fulfilling and rewarding,” Unland says.

Principal Sandra Bevan added that STEM is a vital part of the educational approach at Glendale, not just a label, and that’s thanks to Unland’s leadership.

“Lindsay has revolutionized the delivery of STEM education in our school,” Bevans told award presenters. “Under her guidance, STEM is no longer a mere designation, but a dynamic, integral aspect of our educational ethos.”

Unland also started a Glendale Robotics Club, and holds STEM-themed family nights for parents to engage with what’s going on at the school.

More about Unland’s approach is on the awards website.
