Two significant fires make for extra busy weekend at Red Deer Emergency Services

The cause of a fire in Red Deer’s Edgar Industrial on Sunday night remains under investigation.

Red Deer Emergency Services (RDES), responded just after 8:30 to the 7600-block of Edgar to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the offices of Lockhart Oilfield Services.

“Crews worked really quickly to knock down the main body of fire,” says Evan Stewart, assistant deputy chief, RDES. “The fire appears to have started on the first floor and then extended into the second floor.”

Stewart says it significantly damaged two suites.

Crews were on scene for five hours. There were no occupants in the building at the time of the fire, and there were zero injuries to anyone, including fire personnel.

The cause remains under investigation, but it doesn’t appear at this time to be suspicious, Stewart says.

The night before, at about 9:40 p.m., RDES responded to a house fire on Odell Green in Oriole Park.

There were three people in the single family, two-storey residence at the time, but all got out safely.

Members were on scene within five minutes and were able to contain the fire to one room, saving the house.

“Call volumes are busy for our crews as it is, so when we get back-to-back fires, it’s a lot of work on top of everything else like alarm calls and motor vehicle collisions,” says Stewart.

“It’s not untypical for us to have a busy weekend — the part that makes it busier is the two fires because crews are busy for hours after the fire, cleaning and replacing equipment, and ensuring the trucks can back into service.”

Stewart adds once again that this fire also does not appear to be suspicious.
