United Way Central Alberta collecting donations for Menstrual Health Day

United Way Central Alberta (UWCA) is hoping central Albertans will come through for them this Saturday when they host an event to collect menstrual products.

UWCA is marking Menstrual Health Day, which falls on May 28, with an event on May 4 at Bower Place Shopping Centre. Volunteers will be collecting monetary donations and items. There will be additional community po-up events throughout May, they say.

“Period Promise underscores our commitment to fight period poverty in central Alberta. Together, we can destigmatize menstruation and ensure that everyone has access to these essential products with the dignity they deserve,” says Chelsea O’Donoghue, CEO of United Way Central Alberta.

“We recognize the significant impact of period poverty has in different areas of life, including heightened risks to physical health and mental well-being. As the cost of living rises, this reality becomes increasingly prevalent for more central Albertans.”

Workplaces are also being encouraged to sign United Way’s Period Promise policy, pledging to provide free menstrual products to anyone accessing their facilities.

Data shows that nearly one-in-four Canadians who menstruate struggle to afford menstrual products for themselves or their children.

Last year, UWCA distributed over 71,600 menstrual products to agencies and schools.
