23-year-old charged after dangerous driving incident in north Red Deer, RCMP say

One man has been charged following his arrest in Red Deer late last month.

RCMP say it was Feb. 28 while making patrols that members located a black Ford F350 driving dangerously on Red Deer’s north end.

Police determined the truck had been stolen from Rimbey a few days earlier.

Later, the vehicle was found abandoned and the driver fled on foot before being arrested.

“The driver of the vehicle was identified as Matthew Pennington, a 23-year-old resident of Red Deer,” say RCMP. “Pennington was arrested and taken into custody. Upon searching Pennington, officers located a sawed-off shotgun, ammunition, bear spray, a knife, break-in tools, and a small quantity of drugs on his person.”

Pennington was charged with the following:

  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Possession of a prohibited firearm
  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm in a vehicle
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Possess a weapon for a dangerous purpose x2
  • Possession of property obtained by crime x2
  • Possession of drugs x2
  • Possess of break-in tools
  • Dangerous driving

Following a hearing, Pennington was released, and is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer on March 20.
