Description: 2024 is a leap year and we encouraged our visual arts to take a leap ahead, use their imagination and see where the word LEAP sent their creative juices! Jump, spring, bound, proceed without pausing, by leaps and bound, leap in the dark, soar, leap into the unknown, leap forward, leap of faith, leap into action. A Leap can be taking a risk or acting on impulse, or describe situations that involve uncertainty, courage, or adventure. Leap can also be used metaphorically to express a sense of wonder or curiosity. We’ve marveled at the creations inspired by this fun four letter word!

#FirstFridaysRedDeer for March 1 from 6 – 8pm with artists in attendance. Artists’ Talk at 6:30pm.

About the Exhibition: Traditional fibre arts and textiles at home began out of necessity and resourcefulness. There is abundant and complex research available on the relationship of women with craft; about craft as a message carrier, a keeper of cultural knowledge and traditions, a comforter and a conduit of ingenuity that has shaped home lives, wardrobes, and politics the world over.

Practitioners of textiles and fibre arts were mostly women – they were connected to the working and use of fibres – and the crafts associated with them still sometimes conjure ideas of female domesticity. Things might be made in fits and starts; done in spare time or in time intended for rest – often while talking to others or caring for children and aspects of home keeping.

This exhibition presents the work of 11 artists who saw how their handcrafted pieces and experience as craftspeople relates to the theme; they offer examples of work in a variety of media.

About the Gallery: TheViewpoint Gallery showcases original works of art by individual artists and collectives, and curated exhibitions. The gallery is in the lobby of the City of Red Deer Culture Services facility. Visit our Viewpoint Gallery page for more information or call 403-406-8820.

Lacombe Performing Arts Centre, 5227 Calgary Edmonton Trail, Lacombe, AB

Dates: February 20 – March 28, 2024

Local artist, Christel Dawn Langan was raised and now lives in Lacombe, Alberta. In 2005, she received her Bachelor of Fine Art from NSCAD University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She paints with oil, acrylic, encaustic and alcohol ink and has begun to explore mixed media.

In 2012, Christel won a Master’s award for her painting, Blue Straw, in the Alberta Community Arts Club Association’s Alberta-wide show. In 2014, her encaustic painting Crystal’s Choice, won the President’s award for best overall painting at the ACACA Alberta-wide show and was purchased for the ACACA permanent collection. Christel began selling her art at The Main Gallery in Lacombe in 2017. She continues to sell art works at different art shows in Alberta.

Creating art is how Christel deals with life. She enjoys focusing on small details and trying to figure out how to best show what she is seeing. In 2017, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Art allows Christel to feel like this is something she can still control in her life. It allows her to make some sort of sense in her always changing world.
