Kathleen Ganley announces NDP leadership campaign

Feb 5, 2024 | 3:07 PM

CALGARY, AB – Kathleen Ganley has announced she will run to become the leader of the Alberta NDP.

The former Justice Minister and current Calgary-Mountain View MLA announced she will run on February 5, 2024 on X.

Ganley’s announcement makes her the first official candidate vying for the office, which became vacated after Rachel Notley announced she was stepping down on January 16.

Ganley said her campaign would focus on the NDP’s economic strategy, and said the province needs “experienced, competent leadership focused on what matters.”

Candidates interested in running for the NDP leadership will have the opportunity to register until March 15, and the final day for voting in the leadership race will be June 22 at noon.

In addition to Ganley, former Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi is rumored to be considering a bid, as are Edmonton-Whitemud MLA Rakhi Pancholi, Edmonton-Glenora MLA Sarah Hoffman, and Edmonton-City Centre MLA David Shepherd.

Ganley will be in Red Deer on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2024.
