Red Deer artisan market looking to attract customers, or it’ll close

Feb 3, 2024 | 1:48 PM

A non-profit market in Red Deer is hoping for some more community support so that it can stay alive.

The Crimson Star Artisan Market began in June 2023, and has grown from a standalone organization to one that is overseen by the RizeAbove Foundation, which focuses on community programs and services for marginalized communities, such as people with disabilities, people that have experienced psychological trauma and more.

The once weekly market at The Flex (4919 49 Street, downtown Red Deer) has transitioned to monthly, but organizers say it may have to close up shop if they can’t garner more patrons.

“Markets have always been Thursday evenings, based on the idea of a ‘night market,’ but we recently made the decision to trial a change to Sunday afternoons from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.,” says Ashton Carrington, Market Manager.

“Our goals are important because, we believe, the most effective way to battle inflation and the rising cost of living is to buy direct from farmers/producers, creators/artisans, small businesses/professionals, etc. We believe that our social structures are increasingly broken, and the best, most effective action for revolution is to ‘return to basics’ such as purchasing direct from a farmer/producer.”

Sundays will be trialed for three months before making a decision on the market’s future, Carrington says.

Remaining dates of the artisan market are March 3, April 7 and May 5 (first Sunday of every month). February’s date is being replaced by a three-day Valentine’s Market at Parkland Mall. That goes Feb. 9-11, with hours being 10-7, 10-6 and 11-5 on the respective days. Proceeds will support RizeAbove and immigrants who recently lost their jobs in Red Deer.

People can support by joining the market as vendors (for more information or to apply, go to reddeernightmarket.com or by attending the market and supporting vendors.”

In addition to the regular market, a Valentine’s market is coming up at Parkland Mall, Feb. 9-11. The hours will be 10-7, 10-6 and 11-5 on the respective days. Proceeds will support RizeAbove and some immigrants who recently lost their jobs in Red Deer.

Carrington says they also have hopes to open a farmer’s market in north Red Deer.
