Mrs. Dorothy Marie Marshall (nee Bayley) passed away peacefully in her sleep (just as she always wanted) on Sunday, January 21, 2024 at the age of 89 years. Dorothy was born in Crooked Creek, Alberta, to Ruth and George Bayley. She was one of eleven children and carried strong relationships with her brothers and sisters.
Dorothy and Robert ‘Bob’ Marshall were married in Grande Prairie, Alberta and made a beautiful life for themselves in Red Deer. In her early days, Dorothy worked as a teletype operator at CN Rail, then as an upholsterer at Hems Upholstery, and then Wrights Upholstery. She also devoted many years to CARS (Central Alberta Residents Society) as a Residential Caregiver.
Dorothy found joy in her many passions. She enjoyed sewing for many years, making clothes for herself, and loved ones. For most of her life, she kept amazing vegetable and flower gardens, and people would come to ‘oooh’ and ‘aaah’ over her gorgeous flowers. Dorothy loved reading and believed reading was very important, and each visit with Dorothy would include a synopsis of the latest book she had read. It was important to Dorothy to stay active and healthy, which she achieved by walking everywhere, swimming at least three times a week, skating during the winter, and bike riding though the trails in the summer. All activities she did well into her 80’s. She had a fondness for fine China and a good jar, and could not resist taking them home with her, especially if they were on sale!
Her family will hold fond memories of Sunday night dinners, sleepovers (with her famous popcorn) and of course, her cooking and baking. Visits at Grandma’s house were not complete without a few bags of homemade cookies and her cinnamon buns.
Dorothy will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Laurel Marshall and her son-in-law, Domenico Mancuso, her five grandchildren: Darrell and Amanda Marshall, Baylee and Raffela Mancuso, and Julaine Beattie, as well as her four great grandchildren: Austin, Jadyn, Sutten and Mila. She will be greatly missed by her brother, Gordon, who was more like a best friend. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Bob, and her son, Darren, as well as her two brothers and her four sisters. Our family is grateful to the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre for taking such good care of Dorothy during her multiple hospital stays (she was good at falling), including her recent final stay. We are also deeply grateful to Michelle Wallace for her endless love and support.
Dorothy had strong faith and religiously attended church services. Dorothy’s Funeral Service will be held at Gaetz Memorial United Church, 4758 – 50 Street, Red Deer, Alberta on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. with tea and coffee to follow. Her funeral will be live streamed for those who are unable to celebrate her life with us in person. (to view, please go to Facebook: Life Celebrations with Gaetz United).
