We are saddened to announce the unexpected passing of Patricia “Pat” Lafferty (nee McDougall) on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at the age of 84 years. Although it was sudden, the family is at peace knowing that she did not suffer. She will be dearly missed by her loving family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Bob Lafferty. They enjoyed sixty-five years of marriage during which they raised three children, Ken (Sharlene), Karen (Kevin) and Jeff (Joanne) and two nephews, Gene and Tim. She had eight grandchildren: Kayla, Aimee, Aaron, Kathleen, Gennifer, Steven, Wendy, and Kyla. She also had four great-grandchildren: Juniper, Brooklyn, Clara, and Liliana. Pat cherished her time with family, friends, and community throughout her life.
Pat grew up on 20th Avenue Northeast in Calgary, Alberta, across the street from her grandma and grandpa. She did not have siblings, but she was very close to her extended family. Her dad, Clarence, and her mom, Simone, had grown up with large families, so Pat spent a great deal of time with her aunts, uncles, and cousins. This closeness remained throughout her life.
Pat and Bob met in the summer of 1957 in the Northwest Territories. They soon were married and started their family. They made their home in North Haven in Calgary, Alberta where they made many lifelong friendships. The family always loved animals, surrounding themselves with dogs and horses. Pat prioritized her children and all of their activities and later did the same for her grandchildren.
Pat and Bob moved out to their beloved farm near Spruce View, Alberta, in the early 1980’s. Here, Pat enjoyed gardening, being active in her church and taking care of her treasured cats. For more than thirty years, Pat was the local Avon lady, earning many coveted awards. From this career she developed local friendships and shared an abundance of laughter. She and Bob spent many happy years on the farm surrounded by friends, family, and animals. When Bob had to leave the farm due to his battle with dementia, Pat remained to take care of the home where her loving husband truly remained. She lived at the farm with her cats until September of last year when some health concerns forced her to move to Autumn Grove in Innisfail, Alberta. Unfortunately, a few months later she succumbed to various health issues and is now reunited with her life partner, Bob.
Pat’s encouraging and joyful disposition has always left an impact on the people she met. She was quick with a smile and knew how to bring humour into any situation. She will be missed very much by all who had the blessing of knowing her. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Jesuit Martyrs Roman Catholic Church, 40080 Township Road 380, Evergreen, Alberta, on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. If desired, Memorial Donations in Pat’s honor may be made to a local animal shelter.
