Irene Domeij

April 7, 1926 -January 14, 2024

Irene passed away peacefully with family at her side in Villa Marie at 97 years of age after coping with dementia for a number of years.

Irene was born April 7, 1926 in Hilda Alberta to Rosina and Mathies Levie. Her family farmed in the Hilda, Duchess and Irving area before moving to Brooks, Alberta. While living in Duchess Irene met her husband to be, Elmer Domeij.

Irene and Elmer were married February 22,1948, and lived in the Brooks area until moving to Red Deer in 1966.

Irene worked as a desk clerk, later assistant manager, at the Buffalo Hotel until retirement in 1982.

Irene enjoyed family gatherings, camping, swimming with her ladies group, lunches with her best friend Alice, and travelling on bus tours. She was active in Red Deer Women of the Moose, Rebekahs and Gaetz United Church Women.

Irene was well known for her crochet and knitting. She made hundreds of newborn toques for the Red Deer Hospital Neonatal and maternity units. Her family have an abundance of afghans, pot holders and dishcloths which she enjoyed creating in her later years.

Irene is survived by her son Dale Domeij (Vi), daughters Darlyne Lagoutte (Dennis) and Donna Sunderland (Albert), sister Margaret Houseman, grandchildren Nathan Domeij (Carolyn), Chelsea Keenan (Tom), Shane Lagoutte (Crystal), Amanda Lagoutte (Mike), Matthew Lagoutte (Rose), Nicole Fontaine (Mike), as well as 7 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Irene was predeceased by her husband Elmer Domeij, on October 19, 1987, granddaughter Kaylin Sunderland, Irene’s parents, her brothers Ruben and Albert Levie, sisters Martha Levie, Freida Levie, Alice Levie, Viola Dorn, Lavina Domeij as well as many other family members.

A Celebration of life will be held, on Thursday, February 22, 2024, at 1 pm at the Gaetz United Church.
