Lynn Anderson
November 21, 1936 – January 10, 2024
Myrna “Lynn” Anderson (née Wilson) escaped the recent cold snap on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at CollegeSide Gardens in Red Deer with her son Trevor by her side. Lynn was born at the Calgary General Hospital on November 21, 1936. She lived in the Standard District of Southern Alberta, where she and her brother Wayne were raised by their mother, Audrey Virginia Wilson (née Wagler) – later known as Audrey Vallée – and by Audrey’s mother and father, Ernest Alpha Wagler and Tena A. Wagler (née Graves). Lynn moved with her mother and brother to Calgary in 1949, where she attended Crescent Heights High School.
Lynn graduated from the Calgary General Hospital’s nursing program in 1957. She earned a diploma in ward administration from the University of Saskatchewan. She served as head nurse of several surgical units and as nursing co-ordinator for surgery and emergency at Calgary General. Lynn stayed in touch with her beloved Class of ’57 all her life, compiling their annual updates and redistributing them to the group. Starting in the 1980s, her classmate Liz Craine arranged for the Glenbow Museum and Archives to collect these assembled personal histories, from graduation through to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lynn is remembered by the “Dirty Class of ‘57,” who say: “We loved her humour, her kindness, her leadership, and friendship.”
In 1971, Lynn married Arni Anderson. Together they moved from Calgary to Red Deer. Lynn worked at the Red Deer Curling Club: first as secretary and bookkeeper, then as club manager from 1993 – 96 when she oversaw the expansion of the club. When Lynn had her son, she looked forward to teaching him baseball. Instead – to her surprise and delight – she became a dance mom, band mom, and theatre mom.
Lynn loved sports as a player, a coach, and a fan. To the end of last season, she watched every game her Toronto Blue Jays played, and could tell you anecdotes and statistics for each player. For many years, Lynn golfed with a group of ladies who called themselves the S.L.O.P.P.Y.s: Senior Ladies Over Par Plus You-Know-Who. Later, they changed their name to the L.G.B.T.: Lame, Grey, Blind, and Trying-to-Cope. Lynn was funny, friendly, outgoing, and always looked for the best in people. In lieu of flowers, please honour her memory by making someone else’s day a little brighter.
Lynn is remembered by many friends and by a large and loving family: her son, two stepsons, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Memories of this excellent lady may be shared at www.eventidefuneralchapels.com
