Rebels beat Broncos again in back and forth affair

Dec 30, 2023 | 9:14 PM

In what was the first game of the second half of the Red Deer Rebels’ 2023-24 WHL regular season, the visiting team from Alberta won 5-4 in overtime against the Swift Current Broncos.

Following their win last night over Medicine Hat, the Broncos came in one point and one spot ahead of the Rebels in the Eastern Conference standings. The Rebels lost in a shootout Friday to Lethbridge.

But after Saturday, the teams are tied at 40 points, with Red Deer holding the tiebreaker to move up to 5th.

The Rebels are the final Eastern Conference team to crack the 100 goals for mark, sitting at 101 after tonight; however, they’ve also allowed the third fewest goals in the conference at 105.

Red Deer and Swift Current met on Dec. 14, with the Rebels winning 3-2 at home. They face off again Feb. 6, March 1 and March 20.

Scoring summary

It took a mere 47 seconds for scoring to start in this one, as Frantisek Formanek (8th) swiftly made it 1-0 Rebels.

But before the period was out — just two seconds before, in fact — Caleb Wyrostok (10th) scored a power play marker to send the teams to the intermission tied at one.

But once again, the Rebels would take the ice and find the net in short order. Ollie Josephson (4th) scored just 28 seconds into the second period to restore the Rebels’ lead.

But Swift Current answered again when Josh Filmon (14th) beat Rhett Stoesser at 5:00 of the frame.

The back and forth continued in the third.

Brady Birnie (16th) tallied at 9:04, giving Swift Current its first lead, but Kai Uchacz (21st) equalized with 5:50 on the clock.

Just 2:31 later, Carson Birnie (5th) put the Rebels back ahead 4-3, beating Matthew Kieper late to put the pressure on for the dying moments of regulation.

The pressure turned out to be too much for Red Deer, in this moment at least, as Josh Filmon (15th) scored his second of the night to tie the game once more, this time with just 18 seconds to go.

In overtime, it was a matter of 58 seconds before Red Deer’s Kai Uchacz ended it with his second of the game, sealing the crucial extra point for the visitors.

Final score: 5-4 Rebels in overtime.
