Sylvan Lake warns to not watch Jan. 1 fireworks from ice surface

Dec 30, 2023 | 1:34 PM

The Town of Sylvan Lake says residents and visitors should NOT watch New Year’s Eve fireworks on from the ice surface.

“Fireworks will be launched from Lakefront Park. That parking lot is closed for the season and will remain closed to the public for safety reasons. The pier will be open and available to watch the show,” the Town says.

“We want everyone to enjoy the fireworks and ring in the new year together, but we want you to do it safely. Please avoid the lake while watching the fireworks show. The ice is too unpredictable and could be dangerous. Approach any body of water with extreme risk.”

Per the Town:

Why?

  • The ice is unpredictable right now
  • Due to warm weather, the ice is not as thick as it normally is this time of year
  • Too much weight on the ice can result in people falling through

Be advised, there will be NO lake access for vehicles. The gates will remain closed. Parking can be found in the following areas:

  • Centennial Park
  • Parking lots along 49 and 50 Avenue (across from library and NexSource Centre)
  • Street parking

The fireworks begin around 7:00 p.m. on January 1.
