Dec 29, 2023 | 10:13 PM

A tight divisional matchup ended in a 2-1 shootout loss for the Red Deer Rebels on Friday against, on the road against the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

The Rebels came in three spots and four points ahead of the Canes in the Eastern Conference playoff picture, and with 12 points in the last 10 games to the Hurricanes’ seven.

The teams had split two games this season already, with three more to come after tonight.

Scoring summary

As alluded to, goals were hard to come by in this one.

Kooper Gizowski (14th) scored the only goal of the first and second periods, his tally coming at 15:39 of the opening frame.

Then, with 5:46 left in regulation, Kalan Lind (5th) equalized, ultimately sending the game to overtime.

Red Deer outshot Lethbridge 2-1 in the extra period, but there was nothing to show for it.

In the seven-round shootout, the teams traded goals by Tyson Zimmer and Jhett Larson to start.

Lethbridge then took the advantage when Miguel Marques scored in round two, but Samuel Drancak evened it up a round later.

Goaltenders Chase Wutzke and Harrison Meneghin each held the fort until Logan McCutcheon beat the Rebels netminder in round seven, and then Ollie Josephson was unfortunately unable to convert.

The final score: 2-1 Hurricanes in the shootout.
