Jean Gilliat of Red Deer, Alberta passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Friday, December 15, 2023 at the age of 87 years. Our mom, Jean was born on July 5, 1936 in Grande Prairie, Alberta. She grew up around Grande Prairie and met our dad, Neil, the Forest Ranger, in Hythe, Alberta. Jean obtained a Teaching Certificate at the University of Alberta before marrying our dad, Neil in 1955. They moved around Alberta in the Forest Service having their son, Jim in Edmonton, Alberta in 1956, and their daughter, Barb in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta in 1959. The family settled in Slave Lake, Alberta and were active in the community for many years. Mom opened her own business there. She was also active in the Royal Purple, loved gardening and her birds, and loved to travel whenever she could. Jean spent a few years in Edmonton before finally retiring to Red Deer. Our mom fought MS for many years but never let it win. Her courage in that battle was amazing. Rest in peace mom. We are going to miss you. We will also miss those chocolate chip cookies and apple pies. Jean will be lovingly remembered by her son, Jim (Rosalee Jill) of The Woodlands, Texas, her daughter, Barb (Kelly) of Alix, Alberta, her grandson, Hugh (Jade) of Calgary, Alberta and her granddaughter, Robyn (Matt) of Montreal, Quebec. Jean will also be sadly missed by her brother, Don (Francis) Lowe. Jean was predeceased by her husband, Neil.
