Mr. Roy Donald Schafer passed away at Villa Marie, Red Deer on Friday, December 15, 2023 at the age of 89 years. Roy was born on February 25, 1934, at Wadena, Saskatchewan, the second son of William and Annie Schafer. When Roy was twelve, the family moved to the Centreville District, Alberta, to farm there. Roy met Juliana Dallaire of the Burnt Lake District playing baseball between their two schools, when she put him out on second base! After he left school, Roy worked on several farms west of Red Deer. His first job was in 1949, doing winter chores on the Dallaire Farm. Roy and Juliana were married in 1955. At that time, they moved to Kitimat, British Columbia, where Roy worked for the Alcan Aluminum Co. of Canada, at the Smelter. Their children, Nancy and Stephen were born in Kitimat before the family returned to Red Deer in 1960, as Roy wanted to return to farming. They bought their half section east of Penhold in 1961, and Roy lived there for almost sixty years before moving to Villa Marie in Red Deer, in 2021. Roy and Juliana greatly enjoyed farming life, their neighbors, square dancing, curling, camping, and playing cards with family and friends. Their three granddaughters were a source of pride and joy to them, and Roy loved having them live “through the bush”. Every birthday, a new piece of playground equipment would arrive – a swing set, slide, ring set, and the beloved playhouse now enjoyed by his great grandchildren. After he retired from farming, Roy started woodworking, because he said he just wanted to see if he could do it. He certainly could, making shelves, bookcases, cabinets, bedroom furniture, chests, a rocking horse, and his final masterpieces – grandfather clocks. Roy’s memory will be cherished by his son and his daughter-in-law, Stephen and Gillian; his granddaughters, Lisa (Nash), Lindsay (Mark) and Jennifer (Adam); his great grandchildren, Ethan, Jaxon, Carson, Madison, and Hudson. Roy will also be remembered by his brother, Arnold and his sister, Rose; his in-laws, Norrie Cunningham, Frank and Barbara Dallaire; and his many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Roy was predeceased by his wife, Juliana; an infant son, Donald; his daughter, Nancy; his parents; his brothers, Clifford and Mervin; his in-laws, Lucy, Cynthia, Pat, and Janet Schafer, Max Taylor, Lillie and Roy Clutton, Marion and Roy Brown and Blanche Cunningham. Roy’s family would like to thank Dr. Rautenbach, and all the staff at Villa Marie, for their loving and compassionate care. A Memorial Service was held at Gaetz Memorial United Church, 4758 – 50 Street, Red Deer, Alberta on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. with The Reverend Leila Currie Officiating.
