A central Alberta man is facing charges after RCMP stopped a stolen vehicle last week.

On Dec. 16, 2023, Vermilion RCMP were conducting pro-active patrols within the Town of Vermillion and observed a suspicious vehicle.

Police queries were conducted which showed the vehicle stolen out of British Columbia. RCMP initiated an investigation and subsequently identified a male who had recently arrived in the reported stolen vehicle.

During the investigation, Mounties say the driver provided a fraudulent name in attempts to elude police.

As a result of the investigation, a 33-year-old man from Alix, AB, was charged with:

  • Obstruct police officer;
  • Fail to comply with release order;
  • Identity fraud;
  • Possession of illegal (non-taxed) cigarettes.

Polie say the suspect was taken before a Justice of the Peace and remanded in custody with the next court date set for Jan. 9, 2024, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Lloydminster.

“Recovery of this reported stolen vehicle was a direct result of our Detachment’s pro-active policing efforts. Kudos to the members involved.” says Sergeant Corey Buckingham of Vermilion RCMP.
