Ethel Neufeld

With great sadness we announce the passing of our beautiful mother, Ethel Neufeld. Mom passed away in her sleep on the 30th of November, 2023, at the age of 92 years.
Mom was born in Rosthern, Saskatchewan, on the 18th of September, 1931, to Marie & Peter Harder. In that delightful, small town of Rosthern, Ethel grew up to be a beautiful, intelligent woman with an engaging sense of humor, an artistic presence and a surprising sharp wit. It wasn’t long before Ethel was married, travelling Canada and overseas, having babies and adventures.
Friends were so important to Mom. She thrived on the social scene with curling and bowling, enjoying the camaraderie and competitiveness. People were drawn to her from all aspects of her life, especially her work. Ethel, the nurturing, kind, giving soul, was “Mom” to many throughout her life up until the night she passed.
Baking and cooking were two of Ethel’s passions. In all honesty, Mom was a great baker but sometimes her cooking (cough cough hollow-baked potatoes, hockey puck burgers or hard bean soup) didn’t work out so well. Mom’s baking more than made up for it with baptized christmas cake, date squares and oatmeal cookies, just to name a few. Ethel was generous, sharing the product of her talents with her children, friends and coworkers.
Throughout her life, Mom drew her strength from her children, friends and nature. Much deserving and long overdue, Ethel was finally blessed later in life to meet Merle. Merle was a wonderful man whose friendship blossomed into love. To Mom’s (and her children’s) dismay and heartbreak, her true love passed of cancer. Although their time together was short, it was a lifetime to Mom and she cherished it.
Ethel was predeceased by her siblings Irene, Isabel, Phil, Ernie & Clarence and is survived by her brother, Harold (Hal) Harder; and also survived by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren:
Sharon (Drew) Cahill, Peter (Bobbi) Collins (grandchildren), Matthew & Julianne (great grandchildren); Bonnie (Jason) Devine (grandchildren), Jayden Arsenault, Connor, Matthew & William Devine (great grandchildren);

A date will be announced later for a Celebration of Life to be held in the spring of 2024. Our family is sincerely grateful to the staff at Points West Stettler and Red Deer for their care during Mom’s final years.
