Rebels third-period recovery not enough to tie the Royals

Although the Red Deer Rebels made a swift recovery against the Victoria Royals in the final period, it wasn’t enough to win the game, losing 3-2 on Tuesday night at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena.

The Rebels’ fourth game during their left-cost trip, it is also their third game in British Columbia.

The first period did not start well for the Rebels. Just a minute and a half into the game, Victoria’s Casper Evensen Haugen scored on Rebels goaltender Chase Wutzke, opening the scoreboard 1-0.

By the end of the period, the Royals’ Teydon Trembecky scored at 18:08, doubling the team’s lead 2-0.

And with seven seconds left in regulation, Victoria’s Haugen scored his second goal of the game, tripling the lead 3-0.

After 20 minutes of play, the Rebels were outshooting the Royals 11-8.

There was just one power play opportunity on each side in the middle frame, but none were capitalized on. Red Deer outshot Victoria once again 10-6.

The Rebels made a solid attempt at recovery in the final period. Later in the period, as Victoria’s Logan Pickford was sent to the box for tripping, Red Deer Captain Kai Uchacz capitalized on the power play, scoring his 11^th goal this season on Royals netminder Braden Holt. Assisted by Samuel Drancak and Mats Lindgren at 14:43, the Rebels were finally on the scoreboard, behind 3-1.

Shortly after at 16:02, the Rebels’ Jhett Larson scored his fifth goal of the season with Uchacz getting the apple, to cut the deficit in half to 3-2.

The Rebels could not tie the game by the end, but they did outshoot the Royals 19-7 in the third period.

The Rebels are 6-8-0-2 for the season while the Royals now sit at 9-7-0-1.
