Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Leone Sutherland (nee Skinner) passed away peacefully at the West Park Lodge on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at the age of 93 years. Helen was born in Cardross, Saskatchewan on January 3, 1930 to Milo and Jesse Skinner. Helen grew up in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, where in 1947, she married Donald Sutherland and they started their own family. In 1951, after the birth of her first two children, the family moved to Red Deer, Alberta, where the other six children were born. She was dedicated to her faith, her family and learning every day. Helen was always a voracious reader, a habit she encouraged in all her children. In 1972, Helen and Don moved the family out to the Red Deer Airport which they managed for ten years. After Don’s passing, Helen attended Red Deer College, and then went to work for the City of Red Deer. Through those years, and after retirement, she continued to pursue learning opportunities, including attending many Elderhostel (now Road Scholar) courses across Europe. Helen will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of her family and dear friends. Helen will be lovingly remembered by her children, Diane (Eldon), Keith (Anita), Michael (Sharon), Theresa, Shawn (Martha), and Mary (Jon). Helen was blessed by her family with twenty three grandchildren and thirty six great grandchildren. Her legacy continues to grow. Helen was predeceased by her loving husband, Donald; a daughter, Susanne; a son, Thomas; a son-in-law, Wynne; her parents, Milo and Jesse; a sister, Marion and her brothers, Don and Robert. Helen’s Family would like to thank the management and staff of West Park Lodge for their dedicated and compassionate care of her over the past few years. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, October 27, 2023 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 4816 – 55 Street, Red Deer, Alberta at 11:00 a.m. with a private interment to follow. If desired, Memorial Donations in Helen’s honor may be made directly to a Charity of the Donor’s choice. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed at www.parklandfuneralhome.com
