Red Deer becomes home of third public health dental clinic in province
Red Deer is now home to the third public health dental clinic in the province.
With the other two clinics in Calgary, low-income Albertans living in the Central Zone of Alberta Health Services (AHS) now have improved access to dental services with the opening of the first public health dental clinic in the city (4321 50 Ave.), located near the Red Deer Regional Hospital.
AHS, GreenShield and Red Deer Street Connect have partnered to create the AHS Public Health Dental Clinic. AHS provided the space, equipment, and staffing for the clinic, including dentists and registered dental assistants with two fully equipped dental treatment rooms to serve the area’s high demand for dental needs.
Dr. Laura McDougall, AHS Senior Medical Officer of Health, says many low-income individuals tend to visit hospital emergency departments when they don’t have proper affordable dental care. As a result, she hopes this new clinic will have a positive ripple effect on vulnerable populations, reduce patient ER visits, and on the healthcare system in general.
