It is with sad hearts and many comforting memories that we announce the passing of Mrs. Constance ‘Connie’ Leora Brown on Wednesday, September 27, 2023. Closing in on 97 years of age, she passed over peacefully in her Red Deer home, with two of her daughters by her side. A woman who mixed true grit with class, she will also be remembered as a loving, caring soul that ensured that the values of family and her church were always first and foremost. Born on January 1, 1927 in a farm house near New Norway, Alberta, she was the eighth of nine children born to Adolph and Olive Mattie. Connie attended school in Alix, Alberta before graduating from the University of Alberta, after which she taught school until she married her husband Hugh on November 20, 1947 – the same day Queen Elizabeth was married. The next sixteen years were very busy for her as she gave birth to seven children while the couple shuttled back and forth between the country and the city before finally settling on the farm near Westerose, Alberta. They finished raising their children there before sending all of them off to Post-Secondary Education. During this time she resumed teaching until her retirement in 1980. In her later years, she revived her love of adventure and traveled to many places, the last being to Mexico at the age of 96 years. In between her travels she compiled an extensive family history, published two books, and readied two more for publication. Connie was very active in her community, becoming the Lakedell Fair Queen in 2000 and winning many prizes at this annual fair for her delicious pies. A passionate lifelong reader and learner, she also loved gardening and the arts, especially music. Connie will be lovingly remembered by six of her children, Dennis (Carol); Judith; Linell; Rilda Aiello (Peter); Mark; and David (Yvonne); her thirteen very cherished grandchildren, and her fifteen adorable great grandchildren. The last surviving sibling in her family, she was predeceased by her husband of seventy-three years Hugh, and her son Jon. Connie’s family and faith were everything to her. While the celebrations are already starting on the other side, she will be dearly missed and forever cherished here. A Funeral Service was held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3002 – 47 Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, if desired, Memorial Donations in Connie’s honor may be made directly to the Central Alberta Children’s Advocacy Centre at www.centralalbertacac.ca, to Humanitarian Aid an LDS Organization that assists people when natural disasters occur.
