Alma Stickel, long time resident of the Three Hills Alberta, area, passed into the presence of her Lord and Saviour on October 1st in the Olds Long Term Care Facility at the age of 92. Alma was born to Julius and Juliana Miller of Barrhead Alberta, the second of five children. She spent her childhood years on the family farm SW of Barrhead, completing her schooling at the Paddle River School, after which she relocated to Edmonton. It was there, during the parade commemorating the visit of Queen Elizabeth II in 1951, that she met her future husband, Oscar Stickel. They were married on April 29th, 1952 and began their life together on the Stickel family farm, west of Three Hills. Together they raised 3 children and became an integral part of the Three Hills community. They were deeply involved in the life of Bethel Evangelical Church, serving in so many different capacities. In 2008, after a series of health issues, they moved into the Golden Hills Lodge.
Alma was a worker, whether it was on the farm, in the church, gardening, cooking, sewing, baking – the prototypical farm wife -she never sat still for long. In July 2015, after 63 years of marriage, Oscar passed away. She then remained in Golden Hills Lodge until 2019 when, after a series of long protracted medical issues, she was finally transferred to Olds Long-term Care facility at the onset of COVID, where she remained until her passing.
She will most sorely be missed, by her children: Garry (Gwen) Stickel of Cochrane; Donna (David) Stonehocker of Edmonton; sister Hertha Hauch of Westlock, Alberta; sister-in-law Gladys Miller of Westlock Alberta; sister-in-law Esther Stickel of Calgary; 3 grandsons and families, 12 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
Through the many ups and downs of life, she was always extremely thankful. She exemplified the meaning of the scripture verse found in Isaiah 30:15 “In quietness and confidence is your strength”.
What a legacy!
