Oct 10, 2023 | 2:25 PM

Here are the Weekly Top-10 Rankings for all four Tiers of 12-man high school football in Alberta and the 6-man rankings as well for the 2023 season.

These rankings come out every Sunday until November 6. At that time those will be the last rankings and teams will take this rank into Provincials

The teams are slotted into Tiers based on their estimated school size by the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association. Some re-sorting of Tier’s will take place after the final officials population numbers are recorded at the end of September. Please note that games vs. US opponents, scrimmages, or tournaments are not taken into consideration for ranking or listed in the overall record of the schools.

GAME OF THE WEEK:

The Battle of Sherwood Park!

Tier I

Salisbury Sabres at #4 Bev Facey Falcons

5:00 p.m., Friday, October 13, Emerald Hills Stadium (Sherwood Park)

There is definitely a shifting of the winds in Strathcona County in 2023. The fortunes of the two Tier I teams in Sherwood Park seem to switch every few years and this season might be one where that takes place, or not. We’ll find out this Friday. The Sabres have definitely been a top five team in Alberta for a few years now, but are in a reloading process for sure in 2023. The Falcons have been spinning their wheels since the Chuba Hubbard years but now have strung together a 7-1 record and have declared for the top Tier I division in the Province when it comes to playoffs in November. Still, this is a rivalry that dates back decades and is always a hotly contested affair. It being on Friday the 13th adds even more intrigue in the month of Halloween. Will this be the ascension of the Falcons or will the Sabres prove they’re still the ones to beat in Sherwood Park? Tune in Friday.

BEST OF THE REST

TIER II

#7 Medicine Hat Hawks at #9 Brooks Buffalos

7:00 p.m., Friday, October 13, Brooks Jr. High School Field (Brooks)

Newly minted at the Tier II level due to their population the Brooks Buffalos are having a great season. Now for the supreme test as they face the team that has grabbed the Tier II berth out of the Rangeland league for the last several years. Are the Buffalos legit at Tier II or will the Hawks give them a wakeup call?

TIER II & IV

#2 (Tier IV) Sexsmith Sabres at #2 (Tier II) St. Joseph’s Celtics

6:00 p.m., Friday, October 13, Hanson Lincoln Field (Grande Prairie)

A big difference in school size but clearly these are the best two teams in the Mighty Peace League so far. This game will go a long way to determining the pecking order in the league but will also be a great warm up for Provincials for both teams.

6-A-SIDE

#2 J.C. Charyk Hawks at #3 Holy Redeemer Rebels

12:00 p.m., Saturday, October 14, Holy Redeemer H.S. (Edson)

A long way to go for the Hanna Hawks as this Top 5 Battle at the 6-a-side level will be an important one with playoffs just three weeks away.
