Weekly Top-10 High School football rankings

Oct 4, 2023 | 4:16 PM

Here are the Weekly Top-10 Rankings for all four Tiers of 12-man high school football in Alberta and the 6-man rankings as well for the 2023 season.

These rankings come out every Sunday until November 6. At that time those will be the last rankings and teams will take this rank into Provincials

The teams are slotted into Tiers based on their estimated school size by the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association. Some re-sorting of Tier’s will take place after the final officials population numbers are recorded at the end of September. Please note that games vs. US opponents, scrimmages, or tournaments are not taken into consideration for ranking or listed in the overall record of the schools.

GAME OF THE WEEK:

The Grandaddy of the All!

Tier I

#6 Notre Dame Pride at #4 St. Francis Browns

7:00 p.m., Friday, October 6, McMahon Stadium (Calgary)

Well maybe not THE Grandaddy of them All, with all due respect to the Rose Bowl and legendary sportscaster Keith Jackson, but in terms of regular season high school football in Alberta and possibly across Canada it doesn’t get any bigger than this. It’s a rite of passage for all those who currently attend the two Catholic high schools on Calgary’s north side, as well as plenty of alumni to make their way to McMahon Stadium on a crisp fall day for the clash of Notre Dame vs. St. Francis.

This game has spawned several future CFL and NFL players, so the talent level is always at a premium. Thousands will be in attendance in Calgary’s largest stadium for the match-up which this year isn’t even for first place. Still, its tradition and will also be available via the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association for viewing on-line. A Thanksgiving weekend treat! Can’t wait!

BEST OF THE REST

TIER I

#7 Paul Kane Blues vs. #2 Harry Ainlay Titans

5:00 p.m., Thursday, October 5, Clarke Stadium (Airdrie)

Number Seven with the bullet, the rising fortunes of the Paul Kane Blues will be put to the test this Thursday against the perennial power in the Metro Edmonton Div. I League.

TIER I & III

#1 (Tier III) Cochrane Cobras at (Tier I) #9 George McDougall Mustangs

4:00 p.m., Friday, October 6, Ed Eggerer Field (Airdrie)

Ok Mustangs, let’s see what you got. After making the bold move from Tier II to Tier I this week in terms of Provincial declarations they now face the most powerful team in the Rockyview League – the Cochrane Cobras. The Mustangs have had the most success against the Cobras in recent years so this will be a must-see affair and definitely sort out where both teams are at.

Tier IV

#3 W.R. Myers Rebels at #7 Willow Creek Cobras

7:00 p.m., Thursday, October 5, The Snake Pit at Willow Creek H.S. (Claresholm)

Its not for all the marbles at Tier IV in the Southern Alberta League as that will be decided again between these two teams in November. But it will be a good test to see where these two traditional Tier IV powers are at the mid-point.
