High School football Top 10 rankings

Sep 25, 2023 | 2:57 PM

Here are the Weekly Top-10 Rankings for all four Tiers of 12-man high school football in Alberta and the 6-man rankings as well for the 2023 season.

These rankings will come out every Sunday from now up until November 6. At that time those will be the last rankings and teams will take that rank into Provincials

The teams are slotted into Tiers based on their estimated school size by the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association. Some re-sorting of Tier’s will take place after the final officials population numbers are recorded at the end of September. Please note that games vs. US opponents, scrimmages, or tournaments are not taken into consideration for ranking or listed in the overall record of the schools.

GAME OF THE WEEK:

The Yellowhead Game!

6-a-Side

#3 Holy Redeemer Rebels at #5 Hinton Wolfpack

4:30 p.m., Thursday, September 28, Harry Collinge High School (Hinton)

During every season you tend to get lost in the big programs playing each other. Packed stands watching high octane games between rival schools drawing from thousands of students is a wild experience indeed.

However, sometimes we forget that rivalries can come in small packages as well. Take the kids from Hinton and Edson. It’s not their fault they grew up in smaller communities, but they are fortunate that someone recognized the need for football in their towns and formed 6-a-side teams at their high schools. Now these two natural rival communities down the Yellowhead Highway can have their own rivalry game that will have just as much importance to them as any Harry Ainlay vs. Salisbury or Notre Dame vs. St. Francis. With the added fun of 6-a-side that is essentially fast break football, this game will have all the spills and thrills of any rivalry game with a lot of points thrown in to book. Should be fun this Thursday.

BEST OF THE REST

TIER I

#7 All Saints Legends vs. #4 St. Francis Browns

5:00 p.m., Thursday, September 28, Hellard Field at Shouldice Park (Calgary)

Fresh off of their first loss of the season, the Legends hope to bounce back against the undefeated Browns.

TIER I & II

(Tier I) Grande Prairie Phoenix at #2 (Tier II) St. Joseph’s Celtics

5:30 p.m., Friday, September 29, Hansen Lincoln Field (Grand Prairie)

The Phoenix may not be ranked at Tier I, but there is no denying that this “Grande Game” between these two rival schools in the City of Grande Prairie is a northern treat not to be missed.
