It wasn’t the start the Queens were hoping for as they were outplayed by the Lethbridge College Kodiak for most of the first game of the season on Saturday. They would give up two straight goals to the Kodiaks but it could have been way worse if it wasn’t for the outstanding performance by goalkeeper Abby Kotyk (Bachelor of Kinesiology) who came up with huge saves to keep her team in the match. She was later named the player of the game. But after a Kodiaks goalkeeping mistake, forward Isabel Anthony (Open Studies) would put her team on the board which gave the Queens some life. They were able to keep the ball in their offensive zone for most of the last few minutes of the match but it was not enough as they fell 2-1.

Anthony would score her second goal in as many games as capitalized against the Rattlers very early on in the first half on Sunday. But after a penalty kick in the second half by the Rattlers that early lead was diminished and it was tied for 30 minutes until Head Coach Mahziar Peyrow made a substitution. Rookie Anessa Harrod (Open Studies) came off the bench, weaved herself through the Rattlers defensive line and put the ball in the back of the net which ended up being the game-winning goal. Anthony was named the player of the game against the Rattlers.

The Kings settled for just one point after a two-game weekend in Lethbridge and Medicine Hat. The game in Lethbridge started out well with the Polytechnic producing a couple of high-quality scoring chances early in the first half. But this did not stop the Kodiaks from putting away three straight goals to give themselves a dominant lead early on in the second half. However, two goals on free kicks, one by Ajdin Sarcevic (Business Administration General and one by Jaeden Swartz (Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences), put the Kings back into the match. But they did not have much time with the Swartz goal coming in the 89th minute. The Polytechnic would ultimately fall 3-2. Rookie Eshay Fernandes (Bachelor of Science in Psychology) was awarded the player of the game.

In the match against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers, it was the Kings who would strike first after a great corner kick by Sarcevic found defender Adan Sanchez-Pimentel (Bachelor of Education) who would find the back of the net to take an early lead. The Rattlers would tie it up with a penalty kick and ultimately took the lead in the second half after a few costly mistakes. Not long after the go-ahead goal, Red Deer was awarded a free kick which Sarcevic placed perfectly behind the Rattlers goalkeeper to tie it up at two which ended up being the final score. Rookie Njegos Bajovic (Open Studies) was named the player of the match.

Kings and Queens Cross Country

• Saturday, September 9 hosted by Concordia University (Edmonton)

It was a very successful weekend for the Kings and Queens Cross Country teams as they both finished in the top spot in their respective categories after the first Running Room Grand Prix of the 2023/2024 ACAC season. Starting off the afternoon was the women’s 6km race. Justine Larson (Bachelor of Education) would be the top finisher for the Queens as she crossed the finish line with a time of 27:20 which was good enough for fifth place. Just over a minute later, the next two Queens, Loami Rautenbach and Myah Cota (Open Studies) would cross the finish line in seventh and eighth. Rautenbach finished her first ACAC race with a time of 28:12 which was ten seconds in front of Cota. This would round out the top three finishers from the Queens this afternoon.

On to the men’s race, the first Kings runner to cross the finish line of the 8km race was Ben House (Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences) with a time of 29:23 which placed him in fourth place. Jordan Coen (Open Studies) would follow his teammate and finish in fifth place with a time of 29:49. To round out the top three from the Kings team, rookie Dylan Leadlay (Bachelor of Education) would finish in seventh after completing the race with a time of 30:23.

Head Coach Douglas Spicer was quite happy with the team’s performance, especially the newcomers.

“I want to highlight the three rookies who competed in their first Grand Prix meet today. Congrats go out to Dylan Leadlay, Zoey Longman and Loami Rautenbach who ran well, helping the Kings and Queens to finish first overall in the ACAC today.”
