Mr. Albert Stephen Swidinski, beloved husband of Mrs. Iris Swidinski of Red Deer, Alberta, passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at the age of 97 years. Albert grew up in Warner, Alberta, with his sisters, Marjorie Caine and Millie Cowley, both of whom have passed on before. It was life on a farm and in a small town where he learned many life skills, and excelled at all athletic endeavors he undertook. Albert attended the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary, Alberta, and for a summer job, he worked at the Waterton Hotel, Waterton, Alberta. It was there that he met Iris, the love of his life. Albert and Iris celebrated seventy-two years of marriage together, and enjoyed a life filled with the love of family, travel adventures, and many building projects.
With their young family, Al and Iris created a wonderful life. They enjoyed spending time together at the cabin at Crimson Lake, skiing in the Canadian Rockies, and at Sun Valley, camping, and going on fishing trips. As the family grew to include in-laws and grandkids, there were family trips to Mexico and the Rockies. Albert’s annual birthday party in August was a magnet for summer family get togethers at Crimson Lake.
Albert had a long career as a Draftsman in the Alberta Oil Industry before retiring to embark on many travels around the world with Iris; including riding the Siberian Express from Russia to China, visiting Egypt, going on numerous cruises, and visiting Bhutan.
Between their many travels throughout the world, Albert was also completing his dream of building a log home (don’t say cabin). He had already built boats, canoes, a housing addition, and various other projects before deciding to purchase land, clear it, cut the logs by hand, skin them, and then construct a beautiful home, including a large landscaping project. All the while, Iris was by his side working every day to build their dream home and garden.
Albert and Iris spent many winters in his latter years at their house in Ajijic, Mexico, where he enjoyed the company of friends and family, and finally spent his remaining time in Rocky Mountain House and more recently, Red Deer.
