Mr. John ‘Ian’ Henderson McClurg of Red Deer, Alberta passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Sunday, August 27, 2023, at the age of 67 years. Ian was born in Paisley, Scotland on September 21, 1955, to James and Mary (nee Henderson) McClurg. Ian was raised in Scotland where he naturally was introduced to soccer. With some hard work and some natural gifted talent, he became an exceptional soccer player. Ian attained his plumbing trade in order to immigrate to Canada in March 1980. He worked for various companies in Lloydminster and Lethbridge in the plumbing, farming, and steel industries. Ian was very proud when he obtained his Canadian Citizenship on April 18, 2015. He retired from the Salvation Army Thrift Store in Red Deer after working there part time for twelve years. He loved watching football (soccer) and hockey, and his favourite teams were the St. Mirren F.C. and the Edmonton Oilers. Ian loved watching his grandkids, nieces and nephews play sports; and his greatest pleasure in life was spending time with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed for his loving and kind demeanor, his great sense of humor and his strong desire to always lend a helping hand. Ian will be lovingly remembered by his son, Ian (Roberta) McClurg of Sherwood Park, Alberta and his grandchildren, Hailey, Brendan, and Brooke McClurg. He will also be sadly missed by his brothers, Jim McClurg of Calgary, Alberta and Ken (Lila) McClurg of Red Deer, Alberta, and his sister, Carol (Bernie) Quant of Cape Town, South Africa, as well as many other family members and dear friends. Ian was predeceased by his parents, James and Mary McClurg; his brothers, Brian McClurg and Stewart McClurg; his sister, Maureen McClurg; and his sister-in-law, Christine McClurg. A Celebration of Ian’s Life will be held at Parkland Funeral Home, 6287 – 67A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer, Alberta on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Wayne Whitbourne Officiating.
