Battle at the Beach returns to Sylvan Lake for fifth year

Jun 6, 2023 | 2:53 PM

Former NHLer Colin Fraser brings his Battle at the Beach ball hockey tournament back to Sylvan Lake, this June 17 & 18.

For its fifth year, the tournament will be bigger and better than ever with 100 teams, and an otherwise family friendly festival atmosphere to take in along the lakeshore.

“We started this event purely just to have fun and have an event for kids. This year, it’s really taken off; we’ve gone from 35 to 50 teams, then COVID hit, we went back down to 30-something teams the year we returned, then 67 last year, pretty much all by word of mouth,” says Fraser.

“We’ve added three rinks this year, so we’ll now have ten games going at the same time. We have construction zone fencing to create the rinks in the Lakeshore Drive parking lot, and next year we want to do more to see if we can add even more teams.”

The event will include shooting stations (play by donation), music, and food trucks, as well as the BIG105 BBQ with funds raised from that benefiting the Sylvan Lake Food Bank, Special Olympics Alberta, and 1616, a mental health organization created by Fraser’s good friend Andrew Ladd, with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 2010.

“As a kid, my friends and I loved playing street hockey, so why not create this tournament, and see where it goes? Next thing you know, we have 100 teams and people love it five years later.”

Battle at the Beach will include divisions from U9 to adults, recreational and competitive, which play 30 minute 3-on-3 games. The event goes rain or shine, and runs all day, each day.
