Doreen Shanks passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2023 at the age of 95 years. Doreen lived a long and fulfilling life. She was born at home on the farm near Pettapiece, Manitoba, and died at her residence in Red Deer, Alberta. She was raised on the family farm and attended Brandon College, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1948. She furthered her education with a Bachelor of Library Science Degree in 1967, from the University of British Columbia and a Master of Library Science Degree in 1979, from the University of Alberta. Doreen was the head of the University of Manitoba Education Library for many years. In her retirement, she enjoyed quilting, gardening, and travelling. Doreen Kite became Doreen Shanks in December of 1949 when she married Ted Shanks. Ted and Doreen moved to Snow Lake, Manitoba, and they lived in the North, until 1965. They had a son, Bob, in 1953 and a daughter, Ann, in 1955. In 1965, due to Ted’s health issues, they moved to Winnipeg and Doreen became the family bread winner. She worked a full-time job, fed her family wonderful home cooked meals, kept an immaculate house, cared for her ailing husband, and raised two teenagers. Doreen was a quiet, talented, knowledgeable, gentil person with a heart of gold, and a strong work ethic. Her family meant a great deal to her, and she was instrumental in keeping them in touch with one another, as she kept track of all the extended family. As the family matriarch, lovingly referred to as GG, she shared many family recipes, the English Christmas pudding, and her famous grandma buns. She taught her daughter, granddaughters, and grandson how to make them, and for Christmas in 2022, grandma buns were made in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Red Deer, Alberta, Victoria, British Columbia, and Agnes Water in Australia. Doreen will be lovingly remembered by her son, Bob (Barb), her daughter, Ann (Barry), her grandchildren, Patricia (Graeme), Jennifer (Mark), David (Roxan) and Laura (Mark), and her great grandchildren, Cassidy, Elijah, Quinn, William, June, Leeland, Adeline, Lawson, Abigail, and Kaitlyn. She was predeceased by her husband, J E G (Ted) Shanks, her sister, Marianne Hurley, her brother, John Kite, and her granddaughter, Heather Lange.
