It is with profound sadness, but grateful hearts for a life well lived, that our family announces the passing of our beloved, Doug Gordon. In the early morning hours of April 5, 2023, Doug passed away peacefully in hospital after being surrounded by his loving family.
Doug and his wife Geri were married in 1974 and have called Eckville home ever since. They built a home and lived a life filled with faith, laughter, hard work, friendship, and unshakeable love. Together, they raised a family of three girls – Camille, Andrea, and Heather. Doug’s daughters and family were the absolute joy of his life. His five grandchildren – Emily, Liam, Keeley, Nicholas, and Lochlan – filled his heart with more love and pride than any of us thought possible. Doug was a family man first, and his family loved him beyond measure.
Doug worked forty years in the oil patch. During this time, he worked through seven company transitions, starting with Hudson’s Bay Oil & Gas and ending with ConocoPhillips where he was working when he retired from Lift Optimization in 2010. Co-workers described him as having a strong work ethic; he was highly regarded, intelligent and had a solid reputation.
Doug was a capable and accomplished man, in so many areas of his life. He valued honesty, integrity, and hard work and this showed in everything that he did. As hard as Doug worked, he played even harder! You could often find him around a campfire singing at the top of his lungs, on the dancefloor with Geri dancing their signature style, sitting across from his best buddies with a beer in their hands and crib board between them, at a show & shine with his beloved vintage cars, or vacationing around the world with Geri and his best friends. Doug loved playing golf and curling and as a younger man, he enjoyed playing hockey and ball, which is how he met many of his lifelong friends. He was also the President of the Eckville Royal Canadian Legion branch and took great pride in maintaining and upholding the Legion within the community. He was dependable and empathetic, and always made you feel like the most important person in the room. His love and his friendship were steadfast.
Doug will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife, Geri Gordon of Eckville, his three daughters, Camille (Greg) Owchar of Okotoks, Alberta, Andrea Gordon (Ted McClare) and Heather (Geoff) Schreyer, all of Calgary, Alberta, and his five grandchildren, Liam and Keeley (Camille), Emily and Nicholas (Andrea), and Lochlan (Heather). He will also be sadly missed by his twin sister, Daphne Urcheshen and his sister, Kathy Hollick. Doug was predeceased by his parents, John and Joan Gordon. Doug will be fondly remembered in his community as a selfless, kind, and joyful man. A Public Celebration of Doug’s Life was held at the Eckville Community Centre, Eckville, Alberta on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. If desired, Memorial Donations in Doug’s honour may be made directly to the Eckville Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 156, Box 9, Eckville, Alberta.
