It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Audrey Lucille Nystrom (Smith), aged 94, of Red Deer on February 13, 2023. Audrey was predeceased by her loving husband of 62 years, Nels Nystrom, her parents Albert and Elizabeth, and siblings Lois Anderson, Allen (“Bud”) Smith, Doris Johnston, and Jack Smith, all of Red Deer. Audrey and Nels lived in several Alberta communities during Nels’ career with United Grain Grower’s including Red Deer, Stettler, Edmonton, Grande Prairie and Sherwood Park. Upon retirement they moved to Vernon and Salmon Arm, BC where they enjoyed a very active retirement. They returned to Red Deer 15 years ago to be closer to family.
Audrey is survived by two daughters, Helen Swanson (Doug) and their family, and Verna Nystrom (Dickson Wood) and their family. Audrey leaves to mourn her grandchildren Nan-Michelle Shybunka (Brad), Kyla Price (Julian), Myles Wood (Robyn), Kelsey Wood, and Jenna Wood, as well as many caring great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
We would like to thank all of the staff at the Hamlets in Gasoline Alley for the care and concern shown to Mom. We appreciate the friendships and the relationships Audrey forged while a resident there.
If friends desire, memorial tributes in Audrey’s memory may be made directly to:
CNIB Guide Dogs (CNIB.ca) or 1 (800) 563-2642 OR
Red Deer Regional Health Foundation (foundation@ahs.ca) or 1 (403) 343-4773.
According to Audrey’s wishes, a private family service will be held at a later date.
