Mrs. Marlene Sveinson (nee Schmidek) passed away peacefully into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 28, 2023, at the age of 86 years. Marlene was born on July 9, 1936 on the family farm at Craig, alongside her twin brother Marvin. They were the last siblings born into a tight knit German family. She loved growing up on the farm, surrounded by family, faith, and neighbors, and gained a hard work ethic that would be of great value to her all her life. It also instilled in her a love for growing all kinds of plants, flowers and gardens. Her memories of life on the farm were retold many times and always with great pleasure. Their family life was very rich indeed.
Marlene also married a twin, Ralph, in October 1956. They lived in Innisfail where their daughters Barb and Susan were born. Marlene worked for Ingham Jewellers. When Ralph was transferred to Red Deer with Shur-Gain Feeds, they moved into their home in Oriole Park, where she would remain for forty years surrounded by many friends. Their son Randy was born in Red Deer. Marlene worked for Woolco and Walmart for many years in several different departments and cherished the friends that she made there. In recent years she lived in her lovely home in Parkvale, surrounded by wonderful neighbors, cousins and friends. Friday night cards with her friends was a favorite past time.
Her love for people motivated her to volunteer at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Gift Shop for sixteen years, for which she received a Mayor’s Recognition Award. The Lutheran faith that she was baptized and confirmed into was the pillar of her life and a constant source of comfort, hope and strength, especially during this last twenty six plus years without her husband. Widowed at a young age, she was a brave, strong and independent mentor to us. Mom was very active for over fifty five years at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, singing in the choir, working on various projects with the Ladies Aid, serving snacks at VBS and giving assistance as an usher and greeter. We have many wonderful memories of family trips and celebrations. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were the loves of her life, and we are all grateful for her guidance, hard work and sacrifice.
In 2021, Revera Inglewood became the home where she was cared for with love and dignity. One month before her passing, she transferred to long term care at Michener Extendicare. Mom received Christian Stephen Ministry support from her friend, Pam Campbell and Pastoral support from Pastor Hennig. Rest in Peace Mom, until we meet again. The family would like to acknowledge the staff of Revera Inglewood and Michener Extendicare for their loving, compassionate care for our Mom these last twenty months.
Marlene was predeceased by her beloved husband, Ralph in 1996, her parents, Leo and Martha Schmidek, her brothers, Gerald, Oscar (infant), Harold (Elsie), and her sisters, Gertie (John), Ella (John) and Edith (Marvin). She will be forever remembered by her daughter, Barb (Bob) McGhee and their children, Jason (Amber) and their son, Corbin, and Jennifer; her daughter, Susan (Joe) Windle and their children, Jeff (Chelsea) and their daughter, Chloe, Darren, Jamie, Carter (Emerson), Breanne (Ryan) and her son, Randy (Jennifer) Sveinson, and their children, Adam and iAshley. Also left to mourn her passing are her twin brother and sister-in-law, Marvin (Doreen) Schmidek and family, and sisters-in-law, Lydia Schmidek and Carol Sveinson, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, dear friends and their families.
